Default Best magazines?

What magazines does everyone read? I'm a fan of Performance Auto and
Sound (www.pasmag.com), myself. That magazine is always 200 pages
long, usually with really good articles that are informative.

Car Audio and Electronics is the best, IMHO.
I also read Stereophile and Home Theater.

It can be a LITTLE snooty sometimes, and you kind of have to ignore that (I
don't own a single-ended triode tube amp so that makes me scum in
Stereophile's view....). But it's a great magazine as it really delves deep
into a product's attributes, both positive and negative. I love learning
about the really cutting edge, avant garde, high-end stuff, in other words,
the stuff I can't afford. It's a great magazine for that kind of gear.

I've enjoyed CA&E for... oh, 16 or 17 years now. Always been a good mag.

The most important criteria, of course, is how many ads they have
featuring bikini-clad models posing with amps and subwoofers...

I think it was Stereophile, many many years ago, that tested what was then
a top-of-the-line Mark Levinson monoblock amp... they were greatly
impressed with its design ability to operate as almost a pure current
source (ie. able to drive an almost dead-short), and tested this
capability by using its output to - get this - WELD STEEL. Yup. One side
of the output, as I recall, was hooked to the metal... the other side to
the welding-rod holder... a 1kHz squarewave was fed to the input... and
they actually welded two pieces of steel together.

That's SOOOO cool. I love that kind of thing. Imagine that, a dead-short
and yet the current KEEPS coming!!! Talk about LOW IMPEDENCE CAPABILITY, OR
MORE PRECISELY, NO IMPEDENCE CAPABILITY!

A similar trick was done some years ago (well, kind of similar) with a PPI
amp (I think it was PPI). At an on-site training meeting, a PPI factory
rep. played a 60 Hz test-tone through a PPI amp and connected the positive
and negative speaker wire to the power cord of a circular saw. Sure enough,
it was able to cut through a thick piece of plywood (when the volume was
turned WAY up, of course). It impressed the hell out of me, though I'm sure
your welding example is MUCH MORE impressive as that represents what should
be a dead-short.

It's a cool trick. In the real world, most people wouldn't have much
use for that capability. It WOULD be the ideal amp for electrostatic
speakers, which being largely capacitive loads (vs. inductive like
normal speakers), present VERY complex loads that easily approach 0 ohms
at certain frequencies, and rely on lots of current more than lots of
voltage to obtain solid output.
