Default Sound quality - DVD changer v CD changer

My Aiwa AV-X300 has been infected by gremlins and apparently nobody makes a combo receiver/cd changer anymore, so I am looking at receiver & changer separates. As long as I am buying a changer, it occurs to me that maybe I should buy one that plays DVDs, even though I cannot use that capability at the moment (but maybe in the future). From the standpoint of sound quality, in general is there any difference in quality between a DVD changer and a CD changer? Will be playing mostly pre-recorded CDs, a few MP3 compilations through JBL SP8s mounted in the ceiling of a couple of different rooms in my house.

And if there are any recommendations, will appreciate same. Thanks.

For your useage the DVD changer would be a good choice and more versatile.

I believe that the digital to analog conversion is better in *any* DVD
player than the average CD player because the conversion occurs at 96
bits. At least that's the way it was explained to me.

Shame they didn't explain the difference in quality between crap converters
and good ones though. Also most CD players already use oversampling. Anyhow
the quality of the analog stages will usually be the limiting factor, and it
is there that *good* CD players outperform DVD players, not to mention ease
of use for actually playing CD rather than DVD!

Having said that, many DVD, and multi-format players sound just fine with
CD, far better than most speakers.

Then it was explained wrong (or you heard wrong). There aren't "96
bits." 24 maybe. (96 probably refers to a sampling rate, i.e., 96kbps.)
True, the chip requirements for DVD players and CD players are
different, but there's no reason to believe that one type of player
will outperform the other when playing CDs.

Then I suggest you not put much credence on anything that person tells you
in the future.

Traditionally 'changers' appear to be more prone to not recognising CD-Rs.
Don't know if that has carried across to the DVD world.

Nope, it surely hasn't. Most DVD players handle CDR and CDR/W just fine,
except for a few early models.
