Acoustically transparent but opaque material for blind speaker testing?

: What kind of material should I use to hide speakers when testing them blind? Cost is an issue. Do I need spotlights from the listener side to make the material opaque? I would like to try for myself what the sound differences REALLY are between speakers as speaker size tend to fool me, I'm afraid. It would of course be much easier to blindfold the listener, but I would like to make the listening as normal as possible. I would be thankful for any pointers. Per. The trick to keeping speakers behind a cloth invisisble is to light the cloth directly from the listener side and to keep the business side as dark as possible. The cheapest cloth in the world would work great if lit correctly. Cheers! However, I live in town where it just does not get dark enough, even with (our rather light) curtains for the windows. After a few minutes your eyes will adjust, and the speakers will sit there, starring at you! How is done by manufacturers that use blind testing for evalutaion? I will try cheap cloth plus lights and see how it turns out. Per. How about eye shades - like those ones you get on transatlantic flights. Take care, John. |

Do I need spotlights from the listener side to make the material opaque? The cheapest, thinnest black "doubleknit". Pretty cheap (2USD/yard?) stuff. With appropriate lighting (no lights on speaker side!) works fine for me. |

More decorator friendly colors are available for more money from elsewhere. -- a href="http://www.poohsticks.org/drew/"Home Page/a The Congress shall assemble at least once in every Year, and such Meeting shall be on the first Monday in December, unless they shall by Law appoint a different Day. |

Black speaker grill cloth. It's accoustically transparent, available in decent widths (70"), and not expensive (Parts Express sells it for $6.90/yard.for under 10 yards). -- a href="http://www.poohsticks.org/drew/"Home Page/a The Congress shall assemble at least once in every Year, and such Meeting shall be on the first Monday in December, unless they shall by Law appoint a different Day. |

Why dont blindfold the test panel?
"Laurence Payne" wrote in message ... I've found material often called "swimsuit" fabric at fabric stores (Minnesota Fabrics and the like) that is black and acoustically transparent. It's slightly stretchy. Just go to a store and ask for such. You can do easy in-store pre-testing just by draping it over your head and listening to the background noise and conversation in the store. Also try the fabric used in various items of ladies underwear. If a shop won't provide samples, they can always be found on local washing lines. |
