Default recording gear questions

i've been thinking of getting a yamaha 01V to record...possibly into a motu
828 or 896, then firewired into my computer. anyone recommend any
suggestions or substitutions as to what may or may not be good about this
setup? this is intended for live and recording use. i also don't have large
amounts of money to blow (ie. on a protools setup). i intend to use at least
8 inputs at once while recording if that makes any difference.

There's a lot to learn. Keep researching. Don't buy right away.
