Configuring a newsreader with AOL, possible?
In light of recent debates going on, I thought I'd try to fire up Outlook
Express and see first hand how hard this really is. Well, I'm curious, is it even possible to configure it using Aol as my ISP? Nick |

You don't even have to use AOL software. i seem to recall having some trouble actually finding the address for aol's newsservers and the login info the one week i used it during an internet drought i had a few years back... i think it may actually require the use of the aol software... which was super mega wicked ass... and was only accessible through a series of links from keywords or something... an alternative is to pay for usenet server access from one of the many services available... -- sancho aol isn't magic... unless 13 tons of ass delivered over 56k = magic... |

Accounts, Add.. Blah blah blah... But I can't figure out what to type in there. Your problem is that AOL doesn't provide a "real" news server that non-aol software like Outlook Express can access. You need a real server like news.whatever.com (which usually comes with your isp except AOL) You should clarify this with AOL but from what I gathered on the web they don't block access to other news servers, they just don't provide one. So just get a news server - One option is http://www.teranews.com/ They host free news servers, you set up an account, and get what you are missing to type into OE. I think they started charging a one time $3.00 fee or something but otherwise it's free. I used to use these at work when my isp didn't provide one (UUNEt) and my RoadRunner won't work if not on their network. |

My cable ISP has a pretty good news server, but it only allows three or four simultaneous connections. Teranews says that their server allows unlimited connections, so I tried it out. Nine simulataneous connections, with an overall download speed of over three megabits per second. You wouldn't need that much speed unless you hang out in the binaries newsgroups a lot, but it's still pretty sweet for a free news server. As for newsreaders, it may just be because I'm used to it, but I really prefer Free Agent (www.forteinc.com) to Outlook or Outlook Express. Scott Gardner |

* Due to the overwhelming response to our free account offer and the costs
associated with verifying credit card information we have begun charging a one time setup fee of $3.95. Their are no reoccurring monthly fees with our 50MB/day package. taken from the site.... I did find instructions for setting up AOL's software to do it for you though. http://members.aol.com/hillersb/aolnet.html Have you tried news.aol.com or nntp.aol.com or groups.aol.com? -- thelizman "I didn't steal the FAQ either" Before you ask a question, check the FAQs for this newsgroup at http://www.mobileaudio.com/rac-faq.
