Default External firewire audio interface for laptop

Hi, I would like to buy an external audio interface for my Dell
Latitude D800 (1 Gb ram, 60gb hd 7200 rpm, XP SP2), to make max 2
channels home recording, playing and composing using Vst instruments the
most.

I am oriented toward a firewire unit (with MIDI I/O)

Is there anyone that has such a laptop
with a successfull story to tell ? :-)

Also I would appreciate some advice on condenser microphones to record a
piano (home room environment, budget 600/700 $)

Thanks for any kind of advice.

Ale
