Default AT 4040 and KSM 27 Opinions

Any opinions as to how these 2 mics compare? My use will be mainly for
live use (lead and harmony vocals and some acoustic instruments), with
the possibility for recording same. I do not want to take out my U195
to live gigs, although I have and it sounds great.

tim, not knowing what you mean by "live use," (are you sound reinforcing yet
another rock band's kick ass performance or sojourning, Nagra in tow, in
Tibet to capture the air of a rare butterfly for National Geographic, or
Frontline, NPR, or what?) i would simply opine that if you've got'm, use'm.
protect them from the elements though. in my experience, beer is bad and 10
days of 100 percent humidity is really, really bad. i learned an old trick
an old frank sinatra day engineer taught me, use a condom. he meant it. if
you're in a messy place, you can stretch a condom over almost any grill, and
be damned if you can tell it was there, over the ambi mask, which brings up
were i'm going here.

both of these mics are very affrordable considering their performance.
personally, i prefer the AT for it's sensitivity (less preamp reach) and
transparency (i don't really want to hear what mic it is). so, for
butterfly wings in a tropical rain forest, i would use it. soundeluxe, on
the other hand, i think, is distinct. to me, the 195 establishes it's own
particular 'character' for the recordist's toolkit. i therefore have come
to believe that the AT 4000 series is really some of the sturdiest and most
transparent mics out there for us to use lately.

whichever you choose, just figure out a way to keep the beer or butterfly
sperm from damaging the gold.

yours truly.

i apologize for not mentioning the shure. i think that the engineers are
working hard, but the company is like, a tire factory. i rarely use my 81s
anymore. so, the 27s are better than the 81s, if that's what your're
asking.
