Default Summing on digital mixers, vs DAWs

I'm an ex-analog and ex-Paris user. I've been using Cubase SX and Samplitude
lately, and recently did a comparo of their mix busses. Samplitude won
easily. It was much better sounding.

I'm contemplating upgrading from my Tascam DM24 to an 02R96, and I'm
wondering if anyone has done mix buss comparisons between the 02R96 and a
DAW mix buss like Samplitude or Nuendo?

Excellent advice, Mike. For sure the 02R96 is a good deal more than the
DM24. However I consider the summing buss to be one of the truly critical
elements in a mix. If you could hear the remarkable difference between
Cubase SX and Samplitude I think you would be surprised. It was not subtle.
I wonder if a higher end digital mixer could give me another significant
improvement, along with the better pres, converters and other functionality.

Thanks.
Bill

I don't know about that specific combination, but people "compare"
DAWs with digital mixers frequently. The results are either:

I think my digital mixer really sucks after doing the same [sic] mix
on a DAW.

or

Man, I've been using a DAW and switched to a digital mixer and my
mixes are better than ever.

or

I'm going back to an analog mixer. My mixes sound so much better.

So take your pick. Changing mixers will cost you quite a bit of money.
Before I worry about subtle (which to some people are a BIG THING)
differences in sound, I'd look at the features and see if the Yamaha
will let you work faster, smarter, or more accurately.

There is a rather definitive summing bus comparison out there that

concluded
that all 32-bit floating point digital summing engines produced results

that
were identical. Last time I saw it I was reading the digidesign user
conference forum, but its search engine sucks.

Maybe Lynn's site? -- has a whole section for summing, and I think a CD is
available:

Bill, this is probably way out of line with what you're considering, I'll
throw it out anyway... I've been using an Akai DPS24 digital workstation
that just has the most amazing mix bus. This mixer sounds and feels analog
to me, and a really good one. It's a 56-bit bus, and the headroom is
enormous, just really easy to get a good sound. There are always lots of
comments on this phenomenon over on the DPS forum, I'm sure you would be
welcomed if you wanted to ask folks there for comparisons to the other
systems.

You know, you really shouldn't have to say that. Nobody ever said much
good or bad about the mix bus of an analog console (other than
cautions about how to best utilize the available gain on a Mackie) it
just works.

There were some problems with digital mixing early on due to short
length arithmentic and that people didn't know that you needed to
dither in the right places, but that's all pretty well documented now
and there really aren't any secrets, nor, with modern computer
hardware, no reasons to take shortcuts in a "nominally professional"
product.

Be that as it may, there are differences, just like there are
differences between mic preamps which aren't supposed to do anything
but provide gain, or speakers which aren't suppposed to do anything
but convert voltage to air movement. And when you have differnces, you
have personal preferences and personal levels of tolerance. The bottom
line is whether the mixer (be it a console or a piece of a computer
program), when you learn how to use it, allows you to do good work.

Check the 3DB audio forum for a CD comparing the same mix done thru
various consoles and DAWs. (www.3dbaudio.com) "Awesome Dawsum
