Quad 303 as a head phone amp?
Hello folks,
I need a headphone system for playback and a local studio is offering a Quad 303 for 75UKP, but less an input lead (requiring something like a DIN 5 way he thinks). Any thoughts? Regards Fred |

It's a 4 pin DIN (there appear to be 2 different pin spacings with 4 pin
DINS). The mains in is a little 3 pin Bulgin... looks like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Quad-303-power...QQcmdZViewItem and this: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...l%3Den%26lr%3D 303s are reliable and not fussy about the loads they drive but they are not exactly up to modern hi-fi standards sound wise.... Last time I tried one against a couple of amps I had in the house (Marantz PM6010 OSE and a Denon something) the 303 sounded very dull + boring... One other point was not mentioned. British components tend to have less gain in the preamp and more in the power amp. You might need an attenuator at the 303's input. |

I am not terribly familiar with the 303, but anything that can drive speakers is probably sufficient for the job. I think that the 303 has an unbalanced input. You will have to make pigtails for the DIN connector if your local hi-fi shop does not stock them. Here in the US, it's very difficult to find those things today. You will also need breakout boxes for the headphones.... you can make your own with or without attenuators or you can buy some from Telex. The Telex 8-gang ones are about $50 each here. Make sure you order stereo ones since the Telexes are mono by default. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

IIRC it does indeed have unbalanced inputs, but there is room to fit XLR sockets instead of the silly DIN thing, if you don't mind a bit of drilling. Gareth. |

I wish it had caught on in the US and Japan. The problem with it is that it doesn't latch into place like an XLR. But then, neither does the RCA. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. Over here in the UK, I think they have a bad reputation because of the plethora of really nasty plastic DIN plugs you find, but to be fair, there are decent metal ones to be had, and some that lock as well. That might make you feel better (everyone knows that XLRs are professional), but it won't make them balanced unless you install a transformer or a new input circuit. |

Many thanks folks - I'm still undecided, and may look for a more modern
toppy alternative. Fred "Mike Rivers" wrote in message oups.com...
