Sennheiser HD-600, period.

The Senheiser 600are a very good sounding phones but i can't stand to
wear them more than 5 minutes because i feel too much pressure on the
head. I can listen to AKGs for hours, i think their tightening system
is much better designed and the sound is easily as good as on the
Senheisers, for instance the K-501 is very good (more realist IMHO).
I wonder if i'm the only one having this problem with Senheisers.

I also really like the HD-600 but the HD-580 is very close and a lot cheaper.
The Senn's dont seem to like a lot of volume. I had a Sony pair that was a
solid step below in sound quality but could take more volume, espesially in the
bass without bottoming.

Did you ever try Beyerdynamic DT990-Pro? Just curious. I'm wondering
how they compare, since the HD-580 and the DT990-Pro are my two top
picks. Ideally, I should find a local store that carries both, but
that might not happen. About 13 or 14 years ago I couldn't find
anyone who carried both brands, so I just went with the Beyerdynamic
DT990. They were fantastic: very realistic timbre, very open, dynamic,
very comfortable. But time has taken its toll. . .

Interesting you should say that! I find exactly the same thing.
According to the specs provided by Headroom, the 580s and 600s are
nearly identical BUT the 580s have slightly flatter overall freq.
response and there is something like a 1-2 dB difference in the treble
(600s being slightly brighter).

The difference is very small. To put it into perspective, there is a
bigger difference in sound just putting in new earpads, than there is
between the two models. When you replace old earpads with new ones the
headphones are slightly further from the ear and sound slightly
brighter. I find that new earpads require quite a bit of use before
they squish down ever so slightly to achieve the most balanced sound.
