Stereo Music ... and Extra Speakers?

Apparently the numbers of consumers that are providing their 'HT room' with more than two speakers are increasing considerably. I know it is a matter of personal test and subjectiveness; however I would be interested in knowing what you think about listening conventional stereo CD or any two channel music through four or five speakers. What's your opinion about it? I think it can sound very, very good, if done correctly in a well-setup system. Done well means using Lexicon's Logic 7, Meridian's Trifield, or Dolby's Pro Logic II. There really isn't any law that a number of channels must be reproduced by the same number of speakers, and psychoacoustically speaking, two speakers in front cannot reproduce all perceptual cues in an optimal or even useful way. Some advantages: 1. Reduction of comb-filtering artifacts in centered images due to phantom imaging by using a center channel. 2. Moving hall ambience to the sides of the listening position so the ambience can properly envelop you. The effect you hear shouldn't be the obvious presence of speakers to the sides or rear, but instead of a deeper, wider, more solid front soundstage. The subjective impression is being drawn into the recorded acoustic space, instead of observing it through a window. --Andre |

Stereo Music ... and Extra Speakers?
Hi,
Regarding Pro Logic II Music: Is there any compression or loss of resolution when an audio CD is played in that format? Thank you for taking the time. Regards, |
