Question for the speaker/audio wizards out there.
have an older Altec Lansing (sp) 2.1, 100w 4ohm speaker setup for my PC.
Powered sub. Now the darn thing keeps cutting out (no sound, no buzz). I think there's something wrong with the electronics that control the volume and on/off controls. It's all stored in the sub, I opened it, no bad capacitors. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I figure one of the chips when it gets hot is causing this. Anyhow, I've given up on them for the PC, and I've replaced them with 5.1 setup. Now here's the scenario. I'd like to recycle these speakers for use with an old Hitachi receiver (it'll go in the garage, radio/cassette/aux (CD/MP3 player??)). It has left/right channels. I have an old radio shack speaker for it, that works, it's marked 8ohm (I'll probably turf that one). The amp says on the back that I can hook up 8 - 16 ohm speakers. There's also a separate L/R section (bizarre female plugs) for 11v/0.9a speakers, not sure what these are. Anyhow, can I convert the 4ohm Altec speakers to 8ohm so that they work on this Hitachi amp? Googling the web brought up a few links saying to put in a 50w/8ohm resister on the + terminal on each speaker. Will that do it? Also, can the subwoofer be reused at all (minus it's pre-amp)? How would one wire it up? |
