Sherwood S-5000 II Integrated Amplifier
When I was a kid, my Dad bought a Sherwood S7700 or S8000 integrated amp
with FM stereo tuner. It was my original frame of reference for how music was "supposed" to sound . . . with tubes, of course. My friends used to like to come over and audition the system and some said it was the best one they had heard. The Sherwood was a very low profile unit for its day, and had an unusual white faceplate. It was a very unassuming circuit using 12AX7s all of the way through to the output. The output iron looked small compared to Fisher and others. Yet the bass response was good, as were the specs. Sherwood had a reputation for being conservative about their specs. I recently fixed up a Sherwood S5500 integrated amplifier (no tuner). Tonite I spent an hour or so matching the US made 7868 output tubes. I hooked it up to my McIntosh MR-67 tuner (recently aligned) and the sound was a lot better than I expected. An amp like this with 12AX7s, small output iron, and tone controls isn't 'supposed" to sound good, according to the dogma of the day. Anyone else have experience . . . pro or con . . . with Sherwood gear? Jon |

Anyone else have experience . . . pro or con . . . with Sherwood gear? Why should my, or anyone else's, experience, be more important than yours? Is audio reproduction just a fashion statement? But back on track: you might enjoy trying a triode output tube connection in your 5500; it's a simple rewire from pentode IIRC. Just as an experiment. This makes an audible change in the "sound" and generally innocuously and reversibly. FWIW, 12AX7's are probably the most linear amplifying device yet made, small output iron has advantages at lower signals levels, and dogma is ..... what comes out of the back of dogs. Good fortune and great fun with your new toy, Chris Hornbeck 6x9=42 |
