Subwoofer Question
I just bought a 12" Infinity Kappa driver. I want to install it in a 1
cu. ft. box as suggested. My alternatives are to drive each voice coil at 4 ohms with 88 watts each for a total of 166 watts. Or I can wire the sub for a 2 ohm load and bridge my amp. If I bridge the amp it will give me 270 watts. The downside is that the amp will run hotter. Also, I'm not sure if I need the power of the bridged amp since the efficiency of the driver is 96db. Any advice. Thanks in advance. |

Any advice. Thanks in advance. You haven't told us which amp you have, so we don't know whether or not it will be able to handle the low impedance load. Also, that driver does not really have a sensitivity of 96dB. The "fine print" says it was measured "in-car". Out of car, the way most others are measured, the sensitivity was around 90dB at 40Hz I believe. |

Mark is very sensitive about sensitivity.
I prefer to look at it as being efficient about efficiency. (and before Eddie pounces on me, yes I know that the two aren't the same) |

I have a Kenwood KAC-X541 4 channel amplifier. You're right about the
amp not being 2 ohm stable. I thought it was and for the price I paid it should be. Oh well. I guess I should have bought a SVC sub driver and then I could have bridged my amp and ran it into a 4 ohm load. I also have a MTX Thunder 502 but that isn't 2 ohm stable either. The MTX will give me 180 watts into a 4 ohm load x 2. With a SVC I could have bridged the MTX and gotten 360 watts into 1 4ohm load. Do you guys think 180 watts will work well with this driver? |
