Default Low output (non-amped) blows speakers?

Hi!

I was at Best Buy today since I am looking into replacing my stock system
(98 Civic EX) (with keyless entry). The salesman recommended a pioneer head
unit, and Rockford fosgate 6x9's for the back with Rockford's components for
the doors. I asked him if I needed an amp (even though I don;t want my
system to be loud, just crisp and clear) and he said that it may not be a
bad idea since if the output from the head unit is too low, it may actually
blow the speakers.

Didn't make sense to me. Anyone have an opinion on this?

Thanks!

He's an idiot. It's impossible to blow speakers with too little power.

Keep in mind that he's a Best Buy salesperson...

Cranking the volume up to extreme distortion puts an abnormal load on
the speakers, but an 18W/channel RMS headunit still isn't going to blow
60W or 70W RMS speakers. Don't worry about it. You could turn it up
until you don't know what you're listening to and it will be OK.

(The extra load from extreme distortion comes from two factors. First,
for a fixed peak voltage, the RMS power of a square wave is double that
of a sine wave. Second, the clipping changes the natural distribution
of frequencies that a multi-element speaker is designed for.)

his reasoning is flawed,
but he is right, it will sound better with an amp nonetheless...
