Can someone recommend a DVD/CD player with good sound ($400)? I don't
need more than plain CD playback capacity, CD-R and CD-RW; DVD and
DVD-R. All the recommended components in stereophile have capacity to
play all the newer formats like DVD-AUDIO and SADC that I am not
interested in - I mostly play CD-R's.

Last year I got one of Pioneer's DV-45 elite units, around $500. Plays both
CD/SACD & DVD/DVDA Sound is fantastic. I'm sure it doesn't offer all the
features of the higher end models, but I had a price range to live with and I'm
quite happy.
