Why is DP4 disappointing
Thanks to all who straightened me out on the RAM (or not RAM)

Since about 2.4, and continuing the trend in 3 and 4, they're piling the features on, but (apparently) are not doing anything to optimize the core code - the thing's slow as molasses relative to ProTools LE, and less stable. I just finished troubleshooting a friend's blown-up G4 500 running OS 9.1 and DP 2.7, and speed-wise it blows away my G4 1G powerbook running 10.3.5 and DP 4. On top of that, he tells me that until this hardware failure he was using it 24/7 with no crashes. I can't say the same about DP4. I'll be interested to see what the initial reports are on the just-announced DP4.5. I miss Unicornation (the old MOTU user website/forums). On a positive note, I think MOTU have done a great job with their hardware, and I hear generally good things about MachFive. -- Eric Frampton, keyboards Atlanta, Georgia, USA http://www.ericframpton.com (remove the year from the email address above to get my real address) |

I've had to deal with bugs in DP ever since I first got the 2.5 version, I think I have 3 CDROM's with updates for the first 2.5 - 2.7 series. I think there was only 1 for DP3, maybe one more if your running OSX. So I lost a bit of time but MOTU was quite good at getting the updates to me. |

Are you tempted by the new 4.5 offering?
-- ha I'll be ordering 4.5 tomorrow. The improved Pro Tools compatibility alone is quite encouraging. I'm hoping it's more stable than 4.1 too. Hoping real hard... Anyone know if DP4.5 will be "backwards-compatible" to OS 10.2
(Jaguar), or will it require 10.3 (Panther) or Tiger, or Secret Squirrel, or whatever the **** the next OSX version is? I know, I should probably just look it up on the MOTU website.... MOTU's site brilliantly neglects to include any system requirement info on DP 4.5 so we're in the dark. I ordered it today and was told it will ship in "two weeks". Knowing MOTU's history in this regard however, I'll believe it when I see it, and won't be too surprised if it's more like 6 weeks. Since Unicornation is gone, what's the link to the MOTU-Mac bulletin board these days? I really haven't spent much time with DP4. My studio is still running on OS9, but my new laptop is OSX only, so I should be getting familiar with DP4 soon. I need to find where all my plugins went. 4.5 seems to put a great deal of importance on beat detection, which is of no value whatsoever for me. I seriously need the program to operate faster, though, & hopefully 4.5 will be a bit more efficient. Scott Fraser |

I don't know how much ram you have in your power book but the video on the g4 500 as well as the hard drive/s are likely to be much faster. Laptops often have all kinds of other settings on them for power saving etc. Might want to check that out. Mike http://www.mmeproductions.com |

Scott Fraser Thanks. I just did it, but I have to say it's already by far the most "red tape" intensive experience I've had yet in getting access to a discussion group. Not that I'm in yet - I'm currently waiting for the *second round* email reply that hopefully will unlock The Magic Door. I know they had some problems with folks posting warez sites a while back (Bomb Factory stuff I think), but the number of reasons, credibility assertions and other steps needed to get in there (about one short of a DNA sample) is ridiculous. I hope it's worth it. Ted Spencer, NYC "No amount of classical training will ever teach you what's so cool about "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell And The Drells" -author unknown |

Concerning the motu-mac discussion group I wrote:
I'm currently waiting for the *second round* email reply that hopefully will unlock The Magic Door BRBR Well, it took a *third* round of email confirmations (like what is this - the CIA?) but I did finally get in there, and it's ok I guess. Sorta. It seems to be somewhat user-hotile in terms of viewing an entire thread, more like usenet on AOL than Google's better implementation. Also it appears that posting only happens by email, so it's delayed. That's hyper-moderating if you ask me, compared to the usual "let 'em post and we'll delete it if it offends" approach by most moderated boards. That Bomb Factory brouhaha must have scared the bejeezus out of them. If they're anything like Logic plugs, they went, in DP's case, from
being MAS to needing to be Audio Units, and sometimes that means buying all over again. With DP4 you have both MAS MOTU plugins as well as the generic Apple AU plugins. In the 2 or 3 sessions I did in DP4 on my old G3 laptop, the MOTU plugs were there. Transferring all my old data & applications to the new laptop has sent the MOTU MAS plugs AWOL. Some folks are hanging with OS9 just becuase of that. BRBR I'm hanging with OS9 on my primary studio computer until I get a G5 that's enough faster than my duall 800 G4 to handle the extra CPU load of OSX. Scott Fraser |

Use the Digital Performer forum on the OSXAudio site. There are great
archived threads there on how to optimize your laptop for DP4 and other general OSX & disk issues. Apologies if you're still on 9. Apologies if you're still on 9. I use both 9 and X (10.2.8), but am trying to spend as much time in X as possible since the future is there exclusively. I still have to return to 9 occasionally for certain apps and plugins I don't have on X, but I have 98% of what I need there now, and the added plugin power for my Mix+ rig (the G4 is dual 1GHz) is very compelling.
