Volume control knob
lately 've been having trouble with the vol. knob on my Yamaha
integrated amp. It's about 18 yrs old but haven't had much problem before. the problem is i'm not getting any sound from the unit...until i tap rather hard on the knob itself. a few pops and it comes back on. Is this something a cleaner could take care of? or need a new potentiometer? |

Is this something a cleaner could take care of? or need a new potentiometer? Might be cleanable, might require a replacement. Cleaning is worth a try... buy a good control cleaner (either a "zero residue" type, or the type which leaves a small amount of lubricant or contact enhancer behind), squirt into openings in the control pot while rotating it through its full range of motion (amp turned off and unplugged, of course!). If that doesn't help, you'll probably need a replacement pot. Symptoms of this sort _can_ result from other problems (deterioration in electrolytic coupling capacitors, "cold" solder joints which have become intermittent, etc.) but the pot is the likeliest culprit, I think. -- Dave Platt AE6EO Hosting the Jade Warrior home page: http://www.radagast.org/jade-warrior I do _not_ wish to receive unsolicited commercial email, and I will boycott any company which has the gall to send me such ads! |

Volume control knob
J. McClendon:
From what you have described the problem may not even be caused by the volume knob (pot) but rather could be dry/cracked solder connections, faulty/dirty speaker relay, faulty dirty source select switch.... tape monitor switch.... or other switches, etc, etc,....... do not keep operating your nice Yamaha amp with this problem .... if you keep nursing this along, it will not heal itself, but rather the problem may get worse to the point that no amount of "tapping" will solve the problem and expensive parts will start failing.... At the very least you should TAKE it to a repair shop for a repair cost estimate so you can make an intelligent repair decision with facts. A tech really needs to see and touch the unit in order to provide you with something better than wild guesses. -- Best Regards, Daniel Sofie Electronics Supply & Repair ------------------------- "J. Volume control knob
First try giving it a spurt of CRC turning the knob forewards and backwards
a few times. If that does not fix it get it repaired by a service technician. |

A volume pot usually acts different on either channel, and can usually be cleared or changed by simple turning. greg |
