I didn't know you cycled. **Not as seriously as Patrick, nor as seriously as I'd like, but, when I can, I do. I note that the current trend in Sydney is for un-geared bicycles (preferably second hand). Which, given the hilly nature of Sydney, seems more than a little odd. Some riders even remove the brakes (which is illegal) and 'back pedal' to slow the bicycle. It takes all kinds. It seems to me that a larger percentage of people in the technical trades cycle than from other walks of life. Landcruiser drivers are amongst the worst of a bad bunch. [Ironic, but true story] One of my mates has several motorcycles. He has a sticker on the back of his helmet which reads: 'Volvo aware motor cyclist.' One of his cars is an old 240 Volvo waggon (fitted with a 5 Litre V8, of course). -- Trevor Wilson www.rageaudio.com.au |

That part of Andre's story is certainly factual. Generally SUV drivers feel the imperative to drive such vehicles and as such might well be a few whales short of a pod. However, the story Andre created around a commonly held generalization was entirely fiction and edited several times with several different results before appearing in its latest version. Fact and Truth are seldom congruent in his writings - at any level, technical or otherwise. But, writing for myself, I have on several occasions been challenged (while driving) by two-wheeled individuals. My answer to their rants, always spoken gently enough that they have to shut up in order to hear is: If I make a mistake, you scratch my paint. If you make a mistake, you are pretty much dead. I find that the all-leather, no-helmet motorcycle types to be the most aggressive this way - and the most surprised when responded to without fear. But city cyclists are not far behind them in general stupidity and near-total ignorance of traffic rules. On the other hand, my experience with over-the-road cyclists is that they are a pretty gentle lot acutely aware of their vulnerability and do understand the difference between 3600 pounds of steel at 50mph and 250 pounds of steel and exposed flesh at 30mph. Being alive and intact is far more important to me than being 'right' when it comes to driving or cycling. That the other guy is crazy most all of the time gives me every reason to yield when that option is possible even with a pretty safe cocoon around me. Andre need take a lesson from his fictional confrontations (he recently also gave a story where he was knocked off his bike) - he might not be so lucky should the real thing ever actually happen to him. The Andre Jute FAQ v1.1 (addendum)
Well? I can tell you this. A LOT of people here in the States are
unemployed, cutting back on purchases and the like. But, one business that is booming and has product flying off the shelves are the gun stores. Yep, as soon as it was felt that Barak Obama was going to possibly make it to the Whitehouse, you couldn't keep guns or ammo in stock. In fact, ammunition is on back order at just about every place. Even reloading supplies like brass, bullets, primers, and reloading powder are hard to get. If Obama wants to be a 1 term president all he has to do is screw with the second amendment. There are a ton of T-shirts, posters and such that say things like "Yea, you can have my guns, ammunition first'. Believe me, "We The People" have really had it with "They the Government% and big business selling our jobs overseas. Personally I think we need to fire them all come next election and keep firing them till we get some better people in Washington. Anyway, sorry about posting this baby on RAT. Y'all just hit a nerve with me. Yeah, I heard about that ****... Some poor old geezer over there was treated to a stay in the Grey Rock Hotel for whistling "Deutschland Uber Alles" while he was working in his garden. Plenty more crap just like that, should one care to dig for it. And Hussein Obama is way into that globalist ****, so he'll sign off on global (UN) regulation of the internet if he gets the chance. Man, I hope that one comes to pass...'cuz I'm some kinda gonna enjoy seein' some blue-helmeted asswipe comin' up to my front door to arrest me for dissin' the Emir of Bum****istan, you betcha. I got a .45 (and several other calibers) surprise for any "international" turd who tries some "enforcement" on me for speakin' my mind. Count on it. I _know_ (and have the paperwork to prove it) that I can place a round within 1/2 inch (13mm) at 200 yards 8/10 times - 1", 10/10. So, I really don't need an assault rifle for close work (shotguns do that nicely with less chance of collateral damage), and such a weapon is wildly stupid at any range at all - a waste of good ammunition. I also load my own, so I know what I am getting, and how it works. So, three fully legal weapons in this household cover very nicely. Those who purchase out of fear vs. knowledge and skill - I pity them, as it happens. However, the gun makers live from them. Peter Wieck Melrose Park, PA |

Are you aware of the average range at which armed confrontations occur in the civilian population? Hint: your gun does not even need sights, let alone minute-of-angle accuracy, to be the equal of any other gun in such a situation. Most folks who own guns are not adequately armed against overreaching authorities, professional criminals, or foreign invaders. For them to try to use their guns in those scenarios would only ensure that they were among the first casualties. What most gun owners are really doing, statistically speaking, is equipping themselves to shoot their loved ones or themselves (or both). Chalo |

May I suggest uk.rec.driving rec.autos.driving They're very entertaining and you may gain some fans there. Graham O deary, o leary, Donkeyface. It's about a ride on a bicycle. It would be unduly provocative in a car group. It was sent to RAT by mistake. In that case try uk.transport. Even if you're in Eire I'm sure your input would be welcome. There are cycling groups too.
