Default Windows Media Player supposedly won't play 24-bit files?

Try to open it in Windows Media Player. If it will, it's 16-bit. If
it won't, it's 24-bit. Or look at it's Properties in any wave
editor.

I've got some files I recorded that indicate 48khz/24bit both under Windows
file properties as well as Soundforge, some were recorded in SoundForge,
some in Cakewalk Home Studio 2, both set to record 48/24. They play fine in
WMP. Realizing there may be issues I'm not aware of, if the programs were
set to record at 24 bit and all file properties utilities indicate 24 bit,
how is it that they might not be 24 bit?

Hi Doc,

I know old versions of WMP couldn't play 24-bit files, but I'm guessing
that newer versions will now play those files.

If different utilities tell you it's a 24-bit file, then it almost
certainly is.

WMP V10.00.00.3646 won't play 44K1 24bit files. Pathetic, eh.

SF certainly does record 24 bit files and save them as such.

No problem for foobar2000. Another reason to switch.

IME Winamp will play 24 bit files and high smaple rate files, if you have it
set up to use an audio interface that can handle them.

Maybe a recent update added 24-bit playback. Can you check and
confirm?

It can't find a codec. You tell it to get codec online, and there is none.

I wheeled out a machine with a M-Audio Audiophile 24/192 in it. Neither
Winamp nor Meida Player 10 will handle a 24/96 stereo .wav file.

Just need to add a filter to your setup for WMP to work. From WM Discussion
Group:

You could consider it a Windows "plug-in" for audio playback with old
style wav headers. BWF and many wav files use the old style wav header
which Windows by default only supports up to 16-bit 2-channel. The
filter expands this support for 24, 32 and 64 bit files with any number
of channels. 24-bit BWF files can be a little tricky though as they
weren't specified in the original EU BWF spec, so it will make the
assumption that the files have 24-bit packing and not 32-bit packing. If
there is a problem with that let me know and I can try and derive a
solution.

Download the filter he
http://www.chrisnet.net/msdn/AudioTypeConvert.zip - Legacy HD Audio Filter

There no installer at the moment as it is primarily intended for developers.
So to install copy the file to a folder on the hard-drive and register as
follows from the run line or a command prompt replacing the path as
required:
regsvr32 "c:\my filters\AudioTypeConvert.ax"
and to uninstall

regsvr32 /u "c:\my filters\AudioTypeConvert.ax"

That sounds almost as intuitive as Linux.

Well, at least it works!
