Default Mazda 4M32 in a Protege 2000

I have a Mazda 2000 Protege with a 4M32 head unit and a tape deck.
After working intermittently for some time, the radio/head unit just
went blank and stopped working.
I have both units out of the car and am trying to find the fault. A
wiring harness plugged in the car's harness receptacle shows that the
car is providing the required 12V to both the pins, one that is
switched on with the ignition and the one that is connected to the
battery.

I read somewhere on the net that the 4M32 has a built in switch that is
activated by feeding 12 V to a certain pin on the changer jack via a 1
K resistor. There was also some talk of shorting pins 5 and 11 on units
that have no CD. But thast relates to the older round connector for
that type of a unit.

Any hints how I can check what is wrong? I have a lab 12 V DC power
supply and can test the head unit out of the car.

Any help will be appreciated.
