Recording Magazine Index
I wanted the revisit the article which Scott wrote for Recording
Magazine and was happy to see they made a searchable index available online. I found the article but I was surprised it didn't identify the issue where this article was published. I have many years of Recording Magazine stashed in my basement and occasionally go back through looking at articles of interest. I can't quite tell if this the full magazine article I found online but I would like to find this issue for reference. I built and use this Reamp Box all the time. I just wanted to review details about the toggle switch. Here is a link to the online article I found: http://www.recordingmag.com/resource...etail/314.html Gary V |

Here is a link to the online article I found: http://www.recordingmag.com/resource...etail/314.html The switch gives you a choice of two source impedances to feed the amplifier input. One position, the one with the inductor in series, looks to the amplifier a little more like a magnetic pickup, the position with the 1 megohm resistor in series makes the box look more like a piezoelectric pickup. There isn't a particular right or wrong position for any given amplifier, and other than perhaps a small change in volume, you might not even hear a difference. It's just a nice-to-have thing to try when re-amping to see if you like it one way better than the other for a particular amplifier and sound you're aiming for. And if that's not right, Scott will tell you what he had in mind when he designed it. -- For a good time, call http://mikeriversaudio.wordpress.com Thanks for the clarification Mike. I noticed a change in volume but also a bit of reduction in high frequency content so I wanted to know more about the switch. As a side note, I'm surprised to see this article posted online because Recording Magazine had never done that, but perhaps they are putting older material out because they no longer have copies of some issues available for purchase. It is intended to emulate two different kinds of pickups which present different loads to the amplifier. Recording has been doing that for many years with some of their older articles, you will find a dozen or so that I did there, including a monitor speaker project for which parts are no longer even available. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. I don't think they have put the entire archive online yet. Do you happen to know what year and month this article was published? I can look through my inventory but it will take some time, but then it's always fun to look at these publications; even the advertisements are great. Gary V |

They don't have anything like the whole archive, and I don't think they intend on putting it all up. They're just putting a few articles here and there on. A lot of the articles out there are just not useful any more anyway, such as the DIY projects that depend on discontinued parts and the reviews of discontinued products. In 1999, I did a review of all the available analogue mastering tapes, and I think only two of them still exist today. Not useful. Do you happen to know what year and month this article was published? Gary V This is my electronics hero, his 1974? IC Cookbook had the Phono Cartridge Preamp in it, and I built pc board and all. Was nice to be able to thank him years later!! Jack |
