Comparing differences
Whenever I hear from somebody that listens for differences between
audio components, it is often in terms of "night and day", "my wife could hear it from the kitchen", "under blind conditions without a problem", or some such. That has left me wondering how big these differences really are. Could we compare it to differences between instruments, perhaps? Something like the following: The sounding difference is like the one between 10. A piano and a trumpet (No contest) 9. A grand Piano and an electric piano (easy) 8. A grand piano and an upright piano (hm, getting harder) 7. A tuned piano and one slightly out-of-tune (many can't hear this) .... all the way down to 2. Two celli with different brands of C strings (possible, but only for die-hards cello fans) 1. A cello played before and after the cellists washing her hands (around the threshold; I would guess) Most people are lost below 8 or so, whereas I think many differences in reality are down at 3 on my randomly selected scale. People who claim that difference between their new cable and the old one can be heard from the kitchen (which would be 8.5), should perhaps think again. My bottom line is that it would be good to base our reviews on something that is easier to realate to. Per. |
