Default street theft wakeup call

For every item, there is a significant overhead in the weight of the
carrying materials. The list you suggest is similar to what I carry,
except that it leaves out the many small items particular to my
activities. For example, when recording a musician on a subway
platform, I have to use a lav and direct box. When the train comes
through, noise levels reach 112 dBA ambient, see
http://www.
springerlink.com/content/02377v25529311g2/ -- which is much higher
if measured with a "C" weighting. The only way to handle this noise
level is with the extra equipment I've mentioned.
You've underestimated the weight of the laptop. The pack and side
bag have weight of their own. Spare batteries, chargers, and the
many small items add up. The pack by itself does not weigh 40 lbs,
but together with the side bag, the total weight is somewhere
between 30 and 40 lbs.

I'd leave the chargrs at home, since you can't really charge
bats in the field, or leave them where you park your
vehicle. THat might lose you some weight.

I"m sure you've looked at harnesses such as the film sound
guys are using for your recording gear.

I'd have a look at those mesh enclosures the guy in SAvannah
Ga. suggested. I carry a backpack as my grab and go
emergency communications kit and might look into these
myself. WOUld like to hear if you try one what you think.

Amazing how much tape is on a 10" reel when it's not.

And this is essential to your recording process?

No. Bear in mind this is an extremely time consuming activity with no
income. The laptop/Starbucks enables me maintain a normal life. Without it,
it would be impossible to maintain my life. This is entirely different from
an income producing professional activity, where can/must give the job your
undivided attention.

Well, if that's the case, you might consider doing your recordings with
a lighter package. Skip the laptop, skip the battery chargers, and do
your recordings with a lighter, easier to carry, less conspicuous bag.
Break it down to what you absolutely need to accomplish your
recordings, maybe even sacrificing some of the "well, it'd be great to
have it just in case this comes up" items. Then, when you're done, you
can get your laptop, go to Starbucks or go home, and carry on with your
"normal life".

When we have a truck at our disposal it's one thing to carry a lot of
gear. When you're hoisting it yourself on the subway through less than
salubrious neighborhoods, it's another matter.

Of course, if that's not attractive, you should do exactly as you like;
only posting the above since you asked for advice. Over and out.
