Audio compression ...getting back On topic?

An exception is Apple's iPod, which does naturally support AAC files from iTunes. Microsoft has managed to wrangle their formats onto some players, but it is not terribly popular, possibly because of the 'security' features, although that hasn't really stopped AAC from becoming popular where Apple has chosen to use it, so I can't really say what those reasons are. Overall, though, the public wants mp3's. It's the only example I can think of where a software standard has evolved from the 'bottom', user level, and gone back up to developers and companies - it was stolen by users with the aid of some teenage programmers, very quickly and loudly, and that was that. The usual thing for the last twenty years has been for companies to use file formats as a means to lock users into re-buying their particular system. This has proven impossible with music. jb |

They will not be "yanking" any accounts idiot. Shaw gets THOUSANDS of emails from snivelling cowards like yourself that start flame wars and then run to the isp of the person you are flaming to make complaints when they retaliate. It's rather depressing seeing the kind of stuff that is tolerated by ISPs these days, and the backbone sites just stand by and watch. Not that it's a real problem for me, since the binary posts get dumped several hops upstream of me, but it's still depressing to see these days. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. The guy at Shaw thought the nuke picture was pretty cool but agreed that you violated their AUP. And you've been told about the newsgroup FAQ and haven't stopped, which is another violation, according to him. And I noticed that a bunch of your nuke pix and the threat (which the guy at Shaw agreed was a third violation) have been deleted, did you delete them? |

Can't newsmasters block posts/stop peering/feeds with shaw.ca until and unless they get their act together? I'm sure they could have/did do this sort of thing many years ago, but nowadays Usenet is a mostly neglected part of most ISP's services, and many of them couldn't care less what goes through their newsgroup servers. This is called UDP, the Usenet Death Penalty. It's only been done a few times in the whole history of usenet, and only for very egregious offenders that harbour a large number of abusive customers, who have usually already been bumped by a couple upstream sites. But then, I'm the guy whose site lost connectivity because my signature file was too long in 1987. It's been a long time since anything like that has happened. I was recently reading about 1993 (before my time on Usenet) being the year when the September-without-end started. I can see where this thread is just a continuation of that. Yeah, pretty much. In my opinion, the reason for the Endless September has more to do with admins than users, though. ISPs are reluctant to get rid of paying customers on the whole. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. Discussion groups are sort of like a bar. They are a place where people go to sit around and discuss things. That's why they call it a discussion group. If you walk into a bar and start taking a whiz all over the floor, people will be justifiably angry and they will start yelling at you. They might not be polite. No, he was entirely in order, as are all the other people who are talking about your constant flouting of Usenet rules. The reason we have binary groups is so that large binary files can be sequestered in appropriate places and only servers that have the bandwidth will be forced to carry them. If you post binaries there, that's fine. Posting them here is like taking a whiz at the bar rail. Normal people do not do this. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

Yes, it's unfortunate that all posts can't be polite - many patrons of Scott's
bar might well be quite rude when someone comes in to urinate (as they're sick of that happening), even if it's the offender's first time. But around here too, the offender wouldn't get very far by explaining that he didn't know, it was his first offence, etc. The best thing he can really do is to cop the criticism on the chin, learn from it, and move on. Because in that bar, he'll NEVER be able to justify such a rude act, nor will any level of criticism of that act be seen as too strong. on the chin if this was occurring in a bar. The lesson here is for the trolls that started harrassing and flaming me. "Tony Roe" wrote in message ... Yes, it's unfortunate that all posts can't be polite - many patrons of Scott's bar might well be quite rude when someone comes in to urinate (as they're sick of that happening), even if it's the offender's first time. All that was required was a polite post letting me know that simple text is what should be used. That did not happen. Now, sometimes you need to send binary files to people, That can be important. It's like of like urinating. Everybody has to take a **** now and then. Again, you continue to miss the point Scott. This whole thing has got **** ALL to do with binary posting. It is about rude jackass trolls like Webbrain that start flame wars to compensate for their personal problems. If you walk into a bar and start taking a whiz all over the floor, people will be justifiably angry and they will start yelling at you. They might not be polite. I didn't take any "whiz" on the floor idiot. I made an honest mistake of posting in "rich text" vs "simple tex". Your analogy is evidence that you have very limited mental ability. Scott, guys like you are Richard are perfect internet weasels. You would get your face bashed in if you talked like that in person......but on the internet, you can get away with it. What you idiots need to undestand.....and I will make you understand eventually......is that YOU DO NOT OWN THIS NEWSGROUP! In fact.....you are **** ALL. You have no additional rights or privelleges above newer posters such as myself. Have a nice day! How many hours of audio mp3 files can I fit on a single cdr? The reason we have binary groups is so that large binary files can be sequestered in appropriate places and only servers that have the bandwidth will be forced to carry them. If you post binaries there, that's fine. Posting them here is like taking a whiz at the bar rail. Normal people do not do this. The last guy I saw do that is now 86'd from the local hang. Nobody feels any pain. -- ha |
