What the heck was that instrument he was playing? I've never seen such a
thing. I'm not sure I could hear it because I couldn't tell what the heck we was doing with it aside from turning the crank. |

I'm not sure I could hear it because I couldn't tell what the
heck we was doing with it aside from turning the crank. I believe they were trying to save power and some of the more "green" performers pitched in. --------------------------------------- "I know enough to know I don't know enough" |

It was fun watching him try to sing while turning the crank. "Pat your head while you rub your stomach." It was kind of obvious he doesn't really play one - he just owns one. The keys along the center that he didn't touch internally "fret" notes. It sounds like a string bagpipe and has it's roots in France. You can find his model at Lark In The Morning. He was just using it as a drone, even though it was miked as poorly as Elvis' guitar and you couldn't hear it. Kurt Riemann |

I just did a Google search on Hurdy Gurdy, and that indeed is the
instrument. I've heard of them before, but I don't recall ever hearing one. Hurdy Gurdies were used quite effectively in the 70's by Irish musicians such as Andy Irvine & Paul Brady. Mike Cressey Custom, quiet DAWs - http://www.MusicIsLove.com |

We got no loud metal things you raspberry into in order to get noise. We got only one drum. However, we got birds that make more noise than any trumpet. And a cat that whines and yaks on the carpet. --Chak -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

That was the dance for our first hurdy-gurdy festival. OK, perhaps not the hurdy-gurdy at its best, but far better than its worst - guess you had to be there. FWIW, in the wrong hands or poorly built or poorly adjusted, the HG is an instrument of torture. In the right hands, with a good instrument and good setup, it's a beautiful and fascinating instrument. Alden "hurdy-gurdies are my life" Hackmann www.hurdygurdy.com |
