What the heck was that instrument he was playing? I've never seen such a
thing. I'm not sure I could hear it because I couldn't tell what the
heck we was doing with it aside from turning the crank.

I believe they were trying to save power and some of the more "green"
performers pitched in.

I do not know, I did not see it. The only cranked instrument I know about,
though, is the Hurdy Gurdy.

It is a very annoying instrument.

I just did a Google search on Hurdy Gurdy, and that indeed is the
instrument. I've heard of them before, but I don't recall ever hearing one.

I've got one. It's a Hurdy Gurdy. It was fun watching him try to sing
while turning the crank. "Pat your head while you rub your stomach."
It was kind of obvious he doesn't really play one - he just owns one.
The keys along the center that he didn't touch internally "fret"
notes. It sounds like a string bagpipe and has it's roots in France.
You can find his model at Lark In The Morning.

He was just using it as a drone, even though it was miked as poorly as
Elvis' guitar and you couldn't hear it.

A jack-in-the-box would have been more amusing. Sting looked awfully bored.

No, no, Chakaal is much more apt to have weird instruments. Between the
two of us, though, we have everything covered.

It was "the hurdy gurdy man, singing songs of love."

Donovan Leitch, circa 1970.

There's a Boston band with two Theremins. It'd be fun to see those two
bands together for a Christmas special.

Hurdy Gurdies were used quite effectively in the 70's by Irish
musicians such as Andy Irvine & Paul Brady.

Er. Not quite. We got strings of all kinds. We got accordion and bagpipes.
We got acoustic and electric. We got no loud metal things you raspberry
into in order to get noise. We got only one drum. However, we got birds
that make more noise than any trumpet.

And a cat that whines and yaks on the carpet.

Urgh. That was the dance for our first hurdy-gurdy festival. OK,
perhaps not the hurdy-gurdy at its best, but far better than its worst
- guess you had to be there.

FWIW, in the wrong hands or poorly built or poorly adjusted, the HG is
an instrument of torture. In the right hands, with a good instrument
and good setup, it's a beautiful and fascinating instrument.
