I went into the library to get warm and the first book I picked up to read while I was there was Erich Fromm on the urge to aggression. It fell open at a page about intelligence. I didnt know any of what I read when I was educated it was still believed that mans intelligence is what civilizes him. (I never accepted that but on grounds of skepticism about degrees and depth of civilization, a different argument to Fromms altogether.) Now the accepted view is precisely opposite: that mans intelligence is what makes him savage, with some pretty good data and argument. [snip] : Fromms book next opened at another page, where he describes how a group creates someone a bogeyman, not one of them, an outsider, which then justifies killing him. Sounds to me pretty much like a troll, and the practice of the Magnequest Mob and now the Turner Trash on RAT. Youre not so off-topic at all. : : Andre Jute [I hope you aren't suggesting that the more intelligent, the more savage?] [Well, maybe so, looking at the state of the planet, but let's be optimists!] The same "shadow" or "other" can apply on an individual level, note. I recall Fromm somewhat vaguely from the 70's or 80's, not in detail now. I still have a visual memory of the cover of one book ... However, from your referencing aggression above, I suggest you might find this, an article I just happened across earlier today, whilst browsing elsewhere, quite interesting, in conjunction with personal/social dynamics. Oh, it may seem a bit simple, or maybe not, but, if you will, check out: http://lynneforrest.com/articles/fov.html If you sense impatience and want to skip through, try http://lynneforrest.com/articles/fov4.html I think it's *quite* relevant to your present approach! You might choose to read it completely. Others probably will... Regards, Ross Matheson -- "Plaice, let's not flounder in bass cod psychology!" |

Erich, Andre, Heinrich and I have recently locked heads and touched base, about this stuff. Erich sees himself as the new Fuhrer, Heinrich wants everybody to be extrapolated and Andre keeps talking about Patrick Turner ...... It is difficult for me to find a common ground from where the three of us can go forward on this thing, whatever it is ..... Erich looks lovely in his starched black uniform.... Heinrich has become an eco peace warrior recently....Andre continues to wattle on about PT....... I am trying to keep the three of them together as we thrust forward into the new millenium, towards a common goal, whatever it may be.. We may have to ditch Andre. He is not radical enough ... kind regards jim |
