Default Minidisc recorder - headphone disabled?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought the Minidisc Recorder Sony MZ-N707. Although I
followed the manual, no sound came out yet whatsoever. I tried to
playback various MDs that definitely contain music, the display showed
the dB-Niveau - alas, none of my headphone or speaker kits uttered any
sound. Not even the "cracking sound" that normally comes just when you
plug a headphone in!
Can it be that for some reason the headphone exit is disabled? How can
this be fixed?

P.S.: Even microphone recording works. Again, I couldn't hear it, but
the niveau-meter showed I had recorded something.
