Default Best sounding recording you've yet heard?

What's the best, in your experience? Two categories: all acoustic and
other.

What's your opinion?

Other (Electric):

Mojo
Big Joe Maher on Wildchild

Category: Electric Blues

YOU ARE THERE!!! in the living room of the house it was recorded in.
very realistic sounding live studio recording

Acoustic:

so many, so many close ones.

I would say the Mercury recording of orchestral suites form Bizet's
Carmen
Paul Paray,detroit Symphony Orchestra

Ah! One I don't have. I'll look for it.

This wouldn't be r.a.o. if someone didn't look at the question. I've gone
gaga over many recordings, but the shifting framework of my mind has not
allowed any to remain on the pedestal indefinitely. One day, it could be any
jazz great playing vibes (because, as a buddy of mine says, vibes always
sound good!), while the next it could be Switched on Bach, which at this
point is nothing more than a persistent mental image of an experience, since
the vinyl, as well as the turntable required to play it, have long since
vanished.

The more I think about this, the more important it becomes to separate the
reputation of the ensemble, or recordist, from the quality of the actual
listening experience. Furthermore, the quality of "best" should be
distinguished from the quality of "enjoyment". These factors must not be
conflated. Indeed, one should strive mightily, lest confusion seep into the
youth.

I now reach my conclusion, which will doubtless provoke controvery. I give
my personal top honors to two recordings, both made by r.a.o. participants:

1. "Hands clapping." The slap-echo test is so important, get it right and
you can go home.
2. "Keys jangling." The Keys to the Kingdom, indeed.

Well, I used to know where you could get a fine recording of that.

I will put down, for a distant third, the "Vanguard Locomotive."

The better the recording, the easier to tell where it (or my system)
falls short!

Despite the flaws, I can depend on the Bill Evans Village Vanguard sets
for pleasurable listening.

I like the Richard Thompson recordings produced by Mitchell Froom and
engineered by Tchad Blake, but they don't aim for natural sound.

I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned the
"standards" of Modern Cool and Casino Royale.

I was digging deep into my collection this weekend and must note that
Emmylou Harris and the Nash Ramblers Live at the Ryman is a fine
recording.

Cool, I'll check it out.
