It's going to be difficult for any new protocol to replace the CD for
classical music. The sheer volume of works on CD is overwhelming. I
was surprised to find out that all the compositions of all the well
known classical composers have been released on CD at least once. If
you like Mozart or Beethoven, all of their compositions are on CD.
This isn't terribly surprising since both are popular. But you might
be surprised to find out that you can also find all the works of
Poulenc and Dohnanyi, 2 composers with much more limited appeal. I
doubt there will ever be a new physical carrier with that degree of
coverage of the classical canon.

Wasn't the *exact* thing said about CD 20 years ago? And I recall it being
*very* tough and frustrating, especially for the first 5 years to find the
classical music that I wanted on CD given all the vinyl in my collection.
But after 6 or 7 years the frustrations began to quickly wane as more
classical CDs became available and after 10 years there were almost no
complaints. But I do agree, that because the appeal of classical music has
seemed to declined appreciably the last 20 years replacing the repertoire
with hi-rez will be more difficult.

But on the other hand, Blockbuster has gone from VHS tapes to DVD seemingly
almost overnight.

And in the case of SACD (and maybe soon DVD-A), which backward compatible
with CD the transitional pain is eased considerably more than it was at the
dawn of the CD era.

By the way, the SACD (multi-channel or two channel) Poulenc "Concerto for
Organ", far exceeds any other version I have heard outside of the concert
hall. I understand that the CD
layer is also stunning. Does anyone know whether this disc
is available as a CD only?

Do you mean the Gillian Weir performance on Linn?
Not my favorite although fairly nice recording.
