Default Sanyo wiring problem: 1/8" input plug

ok i'm new to this group and electronics in general, so be nice. i have
undertaken my first wiring "project," and i could use some help on wire
colors.

first let me describe the problem that prompted my action. i have a
Sanyo ECD-T1550... i sucks, no one buy a sanyo. for the record, i
didn't buy it. it was a gift from someone after my JVC was stolen and i
couldn't exchange it. so... it worked ok for a while and the nicest
thing about it was that it has an 1/8" input on the face so i could
plug my ipod up to it and didnt' have to fool with a fm modulator.
however the wires connected to the actualy plug came off, and when i
discovered this i took it upon myself to put them back in place. being
a physics major in college i wanted to try my skills. however, all the
wires were displaced. so i had to guess where they went. i connected
them as follows.

____
gray - 1| |2 - black
| |3 - red
| |4 - green

This is a poor but functional diagram of the plug as i see it. the
numbers denote the position of the connections for clarity of the rest
of the discussion. the colors are the color of the wire that i
connected there.

now when i connected the wires as above, put the thing back together,
plugged it up to my car, and plugged in my ipod the music only played
out of the right side. (my memory is a little fuzzy but i do believe it
was the right side, but i could be wrong). so now i'm trying to decide
which wires to switch. and this is where i need help. i did some
research on the internet and learned that # 1 is the common ground, # 2
is the left channel, # 3 is the right channel, and # 4 is another
ground. is this right? i'm not so sure about # 4. also, is there a
standard coloring system for these types of connections.

thanks in advance for any help.

I have never heard of two grounds. Those 1/8" plugs that have four contacts
are generally for connecting a portable DVD player or iPod with video. They
usually have three RCA connectors on the other end: LEFT, RIGHT, and a
yellow VIDEO.

i think one of the contacts has to do with the fact that if something
is plugged in, then the automatic "stealth mode" doesn't flip the face
around.

i figured i was mistaken about the two ground thing too. thanks.

any ideas about how i should change the wires?

thanks
