Default Cassette Player Not Accepting Tapes

What does it mean you put a tape into a cassette player and it does
not "catch", instead it just gets spit back out? Is there no power
getting to the player, or is it some sort of mechanical problem? I
have a GM factory "remote" cassette-only player to accompany the main
am/fm/cd player. I don't think there are supposed to be any lights on
it, so I can't even tell if it is gettig power.
