Default B&W Nautilus 804 inner wiring modification

Hello everyone

I'm planning to change all inner wirings of 804, as they are quite
poor compared to general quality of finishing and sound.
Has anyone made these kind of modifications on nautilus ser. or even
better if on 804? Any special instructions, pics or hints are welcome,
like to know where am I heading.

I have done tuning and revisions on several nautilus models but not the
804's. In general, B&W's are well engineered so there is usually no great
benefit to completely re-engineering the filters unless there is something
blatently lacking in your speakers (unlikely for B&W). You will most likely
get great results if you keep the fundamental filter topology intact and
replace the wire and crossover components with high quality parts including
low loss inductors, at which point you will have to re-measure the
individual drivers to fine tweek the component values to regain a flat
response; often potentially more linear than from the factory "average"
assembly line formula. Doing this will also insure that the speaker will be
of higher performance but not transformed in character. But obviously you
need acoustic measurement gear to do this. B&W tends to be typical British
in that they are well engineered and thus perform well but can be
significantly improved because they scimp on filter component quality and
accept higher electrical and transmission losses, although the newest models
are less so this way anymore it seems. Older B&W's from the 80's and early
90's used to stuff ported chambers which is something I also change to wall
lining, again in the name of loss reduction. The dimpled flared port exits
on the newer models are brilliant and should definantly be kept.

Sorry for the 2nd reply but I forgot something important. I tend to forget
that most people can't just measure to suit. If you were to change only the
wire wthout changing the filter components, depending on the quality of the
internal wire, there will probably be an audible difference qua improvement
in damping qualities but there could be a downside. It could change the
characteristics of the filter response if the factory filter acounted for
the wire loss. This especially true if you were to change the inductors to
low DC resistance types. Replacing series tweeter components value for value
is safe.
