Default Car stereo problem?

Greetings,
I've just purchased a second hand car that already has a
combo cd/cassette unit in it. It's an aweful, unidentifiable 'cheap and
nasty' jobbie, but I've found an almost identical unit on the web (exactly
the same design, but a different colour and not available in Aus) that
claims to be 50x4 output.

The problem I've got is a continuous and quite loud 'hiss' from the speakers
whenever the power is on to the unit, regardless of which input source I
select, and I have to turn the volume up quite a long way to get any
significant sound from CD's. Even with it up this high, the sound isn't
that loud.

There's a pair of 100 watt Kenwood 2 ways in the back and a pair of 4" dual
cone Pioneers of some description in the front (haven't looked to see what
rating they are).

I'm just wondering if there's anything obvious I can check to see what the
problem might be, or if this is just the 'norm' with cheap stereo units.

Thanks,

Yeah, cheap unit. Have you considered getting an amp? That would most
definately reduce the hiss.

Nah, what I'll probably do is just toss the unit. It's identical to the
Pyramid CDRCS80, but with a silver face instead of black. It's a woeful
looking thing! If I'm going to spend *any* money at all, it will be on a
new head unit :-)

Thanks for the info anyway.
