Shielded Audio Cable
I need the name and manufacturer of some really good shielded audio cable.
I was at USITT this last year in Minneapolis and I was at a booth there that had some really good cable and I can't think of what the name was. The reason that I need this is because the theater that I work at has a weird conflict with audio lines and electrical lines. Sometimes we run into no problems, and sometimes we run into nothing but problems, so I figured that I would check around and see if I could find any cable that had shielding that would protect against an electrical signal. -Luther |

Sheilded audio cable is as common as muck. Anybody involved in theatre audio (or *any* audio) should be well aware of this. You can get it almost anywhere, at all price points. Paying a lot doesn't necessarily mean that what you get is significantly better that common stuff. geoff |

Shielded Audio Cable
There are lots of good cables around - have a look at
www.audiodirectory.nl in the section "cables". I'm using the Gotham GAC-4/1 Starquad cable with double shielding - I think its quite cheap for what it is (it is really good as far as I know). But I don't think your problems go away with new cables - better have a look at the inputs and outputs of your gear; all of them need to be balanced, best is a hi-quality transformer (Jensen, Lundahl). There are some tech-papers on this subject, first have a look at the rane-notes (www.rane.com). Hope that helps Samuel |

Well, all line and mike level cables should be shielded. Most of the problems you describe turn out to be due either to ground loops or RF trash on the electrical lines (from cheap SCR dimmers and the like). But manufacturers of good shielded cable include Canare, Gepco, Belden, Mogami, and Gotham. There are plenty of others, though. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
