2.} When I said 'peak' above I meant the maximum rms value of a dynamic music

signal (as in PPM metering for example) This is what audio ppl normally mean by the
'peak value' of a signal. You were referring to the mamimum instantaneous peak value
of a waveform (what electronic techs often mean).

Surely in these digital days we ALL have to take notice of the actual
peak voltage - that's what is going to overload an ADC, not some
averaged-out level.

Try telling that to ppl who still use VUs !

They have their use it has to be said since VUs measure perceived volume or loudness.

Your argument dates back to the issue of PPMs vs VUs and I don't suppose it will ever
be settled.

DO people use VUs in front of a digital stage? And just about every
input IS in front of a digital stage these days!

It depends what you are doing. If you are doing live sound, the VU
meter is still quite useful, although you need peak indication as
well. For recording, there is so much headroom available with digital
technology that the VU is redundant. All you want is to make sure the
signal peaks don't get close to digital max.

VUs still regularly feature on modern pro audio mixing consoles despite the fact that most
of them are now recording to hard disk.

Tradition ?

They're more entertaining to watch than PPMs btw.

"It's vintage, man."

Mostly it's the worship of the old stuff just for the sake of the
marketing appeal of "vintage tone."

Course everyone forgets that vintage tone meant a ****load of noise
and hiss, but...

Oh, and now that they've been "out" for so long they suddenly look
cool again.

Thanks to you all for the info.
My only comment is "****!"
Looks like I am going to have to desgn a bit of circuitry.

But maybe only a simple passive attenuator.

What are you trying to do?

Wrong direction.
Feed a 0dB signal into a line card, where 0dB appears to be defined as
2V RMS
