Default Surround sound question

Will all 5 speakers on a 5.1ch surround sound system be put to use no matter
the audio source e.g radio or cassette etc. or is it only if the audio
source is capable of 5.1ch sound e.g. DVD's?

You need to have a source that has surround sound information
in it, and you need a device that is able to decode the surround
sound format and route the various signal to the 6 different
amplifiers and speakers. If you do not have surround sound
information, then you will revert to a 2 channel stereo or 1
channel mono system. Some pre-amps, decoders, and receivers
have simulated surround sound and various DSP effects that
generate fake surround sound from non-surround sound inputs.
In this latter case, you will get sound from all 6 speakers.

If the source is two-channel (CDs, cassettes, FM radio, LPs,
"2.0" Dolby Digital), then the output will be two channel
(front left/right, with bass moved to the subwoofer if
the recevier or player has been set to do that*) --
*unless* you first apply increasingly common receiver
features like Dolby Pro Logic II, which will
generate output for the other channels, based on the original
two-channel signal.

(* in which case the output is actually 'three channel' or
"2.1")
