Default Light rust spots on capstan

Teac A4010s reel to reel, my capstan is showing some rust spots, they
are not raised and you really can't feel them. How can I get this
off? Any groups out there for vintage reel to reel fans to post on?
Thanks.

Metal polishing cream and a linen cloth (x) comes to mind as a gentle
approach, but first make a wow and flutter measurement, using (too)
abrasive cleaning may be worse than doing nothing. From your description
I'd suggest trying the do nothing approach or a non abrasive auto
polishing cream and the same linen cloth. Discoloration itself is not an
issue, un-roundness due to over-polishing would be a major issue.

(x) cotton cloth, not paper, paper is way more abrasive.

Thanks.

Kind regards

If you can't feel them, they they can be ignored. If you can feel them,
they will probably contribute to increased wow and flutter.

Whatever you do, don't damage the roundness of the shaft. Usually, the
discolorations are oxide or tape binder build-up. Head cleaner or other
type of solvent will remove these deposits. Be carefull not to let any
solvent run into the bearing. Also note that some solvents will also
damage the the deck's finish if a drop strays from the metal parts.

In a few cases there were obvious rust spots or breakdowns in the shaft
plating. In these situations, or if the shaft is heavily gunked with
tape debris, I will *GENTLY* scrape the shaft (while running) with a
not so sharp straight edge. Scraping will knock off all the tape
residue and remove any surface rust deposits. Many capstans are chrome
plated. The chrome is fairly hard and difficult to accidently damage.
(Unfortunately, if poorly done, the chrome plating may tend to blister
after a few years.)

Thanks all for the comments, the spotting was in fact tape residue
caked on pretty hard. I used 91% alcohol with some success, then some
VCR head cleaner I had laying around and it is all gone. Took a
little longer than I had expected, though.

Then do it more often. You can find how often to clean your machine
on google. You should also be cleaning the capstan roller when you
do.
