Default microcassette, better quality playback

So I have microcassettes I'd like to archive to the PC. (My brother and
I used to carry the things around and make crazy recordings noises.)
All I need is info the playback quality of devices. Product
descriptions always tout other features like VOR and 2x speed. I have
to think I could get better quality using something other than what I
have now, a Sony M-540V. So far I've looked at used transcribers on
eBay, read reviews at Amazon for a few $30+ microcassette recorders,
and heard the old Sony BM model transcribers were good, but I'd prefer
advice if possible before I sink $50-100 on something. (Would like to
keep it in that price range.)
Thanks,
Tim
