Default A Comment Britney et al.

Hey,

My restoration project of a Hallicrafters S-19R ("Sky Buddy")
communications receiver is just about complete, other than a missing
bottom cover. A fellow NG member is sending me a bottom cover and the
set will be complete once it arrives. The receiver has been restored
to working order, caps replaced, and circuitry remains stock.

In reply to one of my previous posts, someone asked if Britney sounds
any better through tube radios. Well, I gave the Hallicrafters a
listen last night and played CD albums of Briteny Spears, Christina
Aguilera, L'il Kim, Pink and others through my S-19R via an Eico 324
RF generator, and the answer to the question is YES, they do sound
better through tube radios. In my opinion, that's how they ought to
be heard if broadcasted on the air (not through crappy car radios).
Hope I've answered a question.

BTW: the rectifier in my S-19R is a UX-280, output is type 41, and
driver is 6SQ7 (metal).

Cheers,

C.W.

Everything sounds good through a nice tube set and I can't tell you why but
I've heard enough of Ken G's sets to know this.

Thats interesting. Now the real test.

Do they look any less skanky in their videos when they are viewed on an all
vacuum tube (i.e. no solid-state) television set ?

Yeah, if you turn down the vertical size. Also has the side effect of
giving it more of a wide-screen aspect ratio.

Cheers,

Yes, I agree. I was just listening to a class lecture tape through
that same set-up, and even my prof's voice sounded good.
