Default Which is the best subwoofer interconnect cable.?

I'm looking to go high end as far as a subwoofer is concerned for my home
theater system but I'd like to know what subwoofer cable to get. Of course
Monster Cable comes to mind and of the monster cables products for
subwoofers are concerned such as the the Monster Bass 300 and Monster Bass
400, the monster cable ZBass100 is supposed to be the best and the price
reflects that at over $100.00 for about 15 ft but are there alternatives out
there that I do not know about?. Is this the best subwoofer cable that money
can buy or are there other products that are just as good and more
affordable. Any replies to this post will be appreciated.

Thanks

If you are talking about line level cables - save your money. Get some
Radio Shack wires or equivalent. High price cables won't make any
difference. If you are talking about speaker wire, just get some 12
gage wire at home depot.

I suggest a good 13 Amp mains cable. Perfectly low enough resistance and low
cost.

There will be NO discernable or measurable difference between that and the
fanciest cable unless you get a cable that actually and deliberately changes
the sound so that you think it's made an improvement. A loudspeaker cable
with any form of filtering is, in my mind, suspect.

Their are a lot of good reports from those using Belden's coaxial part
number 89259, and good quality RCA plugs like cardas, WBT,etc.

I think that any cable which is well shielded will work well in that
application. A long linear run to an amplifier input can act as an
antennae for RF pick-up, which you do not want. A good shielded cable
will help to eliminate that. Your find is as good a choice as their is
likely available however you might also find others that provide that
performance at prices on both sides of that.

This is an "interconnect". Further it is an interconnect with almost
no reqirements except that it conduct electricity. You can--and I
do--use telephone wire to connect it up. A twisted pair will suffice,
or any coax with the proper connectors. Anything over $10 is
excessive.

I also believe that wet string may also work, (someone once said that snake
oil polished string was even better) and as you are concerned with the price
why use RCA connectors; selotape will also work. total cost $1.00

If you can insure that the string always stays wet, preferably with an
electrolyte like brine, yes, then it should work, if the subwoofer amp
has high input impedance. Also, making a reliable connection from the
wet string to the pins of an RCA plug is not that straightforward. So
using an inexpensive RCA cable is the better way. Those cables that come
with A/V equipment, like a DVD player, are ideal.

It is hard to think of an application that is easier than carrying the
subwoofer preamp signal to the subwoofer amp. Sure, care should be taken
that there is no broken shields, but it is really child's play.

RCA connectors are used because those are the standard connectors. It
will be more expensive to use any other connector.

Thanks Chung, I think you have reminded me of what the oil did, it
prevented the evaporation of the electrolyte.
Warm Springs, water is rumoured to be the best.
It's supposed to work best when listening to Medicine Head & Sioux-sie and
the Banshees.

I agree a good screened cable would be better than 3core mains cable, or a
twisted pair.

Hopi you have a good holiday.

I'll agree. I've used dozens (maybe even hundreds) of different interconnects
and I've yet to find an aftermarket (even very, very expensive ones)
interconnect was sonically superior to even the cheapest electronic parts store
blister-pak or those cheapies that come in the box with an electronic component
or powered subwoofer.

I even held a 'bake-off' where audio club members were asked to bring thier own
"reference" interconnect to compare with a "junk-box" rca in a bias controlled
listening test. Using a 'short-length' test set-up (the DUT running from the
analog output of cd player to a direct-coupled power amplifier with single
subjects listening through headphones taken from the headphone jack of the
amplifier.

No subject, including the "designer" of a regionally branded product was able
to reliably distinguish any interconnect (including ones costing up to $300 a
meter) from a pair of old, very cheap, rcas dug out of my wire-box. Many of the
subjects also brought their own program materialand were not limited to that
which I or the club meeting host had available.

The wire 'designer' complained that headphones precluded him from experiencing
the great image that his wires could "throw."

We we repeated the experiment for him the following week where he supplied his
own programs, interconnects, speaker cables AND speakers. He still couldn't
reliably 'hear' his own cables.

This is the sort of event (and the sort of results) that just begs for
more details. Primarily because as described above it is no more
substantiated or authoritative than the many "I can hear the
difference" claims people spout so often. I don't doubt the above
event took place, or that the above results really transpired, but I'd
find it a far more effective weapon in the snake oil wars if you could
provide more info about when & where this took place, who was
involved, what the name of your "audio club" is...and especially, what
company the wire designer works for! C'mon, Tom, spill the beans!

The event was a Prairie State Audio Contruction Society (PSACS) meeting held in
the ealry90s at LaGrange Illinois at a members home. I'd have to look up the
date and the number of subjects but there were approximately 10 folks who
brought cables.

The cable brand was not nationally distributed and no, I'm not going to tell
whoit was.

Will disclose the wire manufacturer who challenged me to visit his company
where he would "show" me cable differences in 1996. When I arrived, not
un-annoinced with 3 Boston Audio Society members (also acknowledged in advance)
they refused to conduct a bias-controlled experiment. Transparent Audio

Not a lot of people know this, but coax wire is not as useful as
ultra-cheap twisted pair for this application, because any
interference at subwoofer frequencies will almost certainly be
electromagnetic, not electrostatic in nature, and twisted pair helps
to reduce pickup by minimising loop area.
