Just out of interest, do Magnaplanars sound similar to Quads ?

Steve

Now would be a good time to see if your asbestos suit still fits, Steve.

Andre Jute

I nearly bought a pair second hand, but was put off by their age and size
(almost as large as a door) so bought a pair of Castle Howards instead.

Oi!
I went the route from Quad ESLs via various cone speakers to Magnepan
MG1a (mod) and SMG-A (still have them both, but God why did I ever
sell the Quads?).
The Maggies lack the transparency and detail of the Quads, but
otherwise I can live well with them, esp. on tube amps.
The little SMG-A surprised me with its sound quality, especially given
what I paid for them (euro 200, about US$240). Naturally, there's an
octave missing in the low end compared to the biggies.

I've heard the newer 1.2 at some occasion, but I wouldn't trade my
MG1a's for them at that price!
Placement is very important, but that goes for any speaker.

What's wrong with speakers the size of a door? Don't we build our
living and listening room around our sound systems anymore, men? :-)

I've never heard the Castle Howards, so I can't comment on that.
If you ever decide to buy second-hand Maggies, don't be afraid of
their age. But have them inspected on loose windings and bad glue.
If that's OK, they'll probably outlive you. My MG1a's are over 20
years old!

I just didn't have the space, I can't comment on Quad electrostatics as I
have never had a good listen to them.
The Maggies sounded pretty good, but as I said, no room, as it is I hate the
hifi sharing rooms with the H/T setup,
I use different amps for music and H/T, but as I only have 1 set of speakers
capable of good music reproduction I have to keek swapping the speakers
over whenever I get around to DVDs. Incedently I went with Castles for the
rest of my H/T speakers just for the balance of sound quality, so far i have
not found the need for a sub woofer.
Thanks for the advice on the maggies.
P.S. I don't have a tube amp, but a hybrid Copland CSA14.
