Default Audio transformer questions

I notice that inexpensive audio transformers have limited low frequency
response and are invariably offered as either step-down or 1:1. Two
questions. Can anything be done to extend the low end response, and
what are the practical limitations to turning one of these transformers
around and using it as a step up? (In other words, is there a cheap
alternative to an expensive Jensen mic input transformer?)
