So I'm going to audition and compare a KM185, Schoeps CMCMK41 and a
Josephson Series 4. This will be my nylon string guitar mic. I have a
mackie Onyx mixer so i'm also going to get a pre for the new mic. I
could really use 2 channels so I'm leaning toward the FMR RNP, but I'm
also thinking about a single channel grace. If I were to buy one of
these three mics, thse of you with experience with this equipment,
should I get the RNP or will I notice a really great improvement if I
get the Grace instead. Eventually I'll buy a Grace anyway, but in
terms of these mics will I get good results with the RNP or do I need
to spend the extra change and buy the Grace now?

The RNP is a good preamp.

And, because it's a good preamp, you can buy it now, and sell it a few
years down the road and get most of your money back.

That's the thing about good equipment. When you _do_ want to upgrade,
you can get your money back selling it used. When you buy typical junk
from the local music store, the value drops in half when you take it
out the door.

That's great advice. As a professional piano technician, I just wish the
people who look to buy cheap pianos would read this.

If you can, you might want to audition the Gefell M300. Depending on
your particular guitar and playing style, you might like it. I have
Schoeps M222/41 and the Josephson Series Six cardiods, and on some
guitars I prefer the Gefell.

Buy the Schoeps first. Then, if you have any money left, worry about
outboard preamps. That's gonna give you the most bang for your buck.
It will be better into a better preamp, but the difference from Oktavia
to Schoeps is gonna be WAY bigger than the difference from Mackie pre to
Grace.
