Default ECC40

Hey Andy ,

It's "the" great tube in my CD-player !!
The "sound" is between the neutral 6SN7 and the "singing" 6SL7 .
It's someting like the best of both ...... Voices are realy great !!
I have 2 brands . Tungsram and Valvo . I like the Valvo even more than
the Tungsram .
In a way I like the base since I've bought a bag of 10 a while ago .....
BTW the AZ41 is also a great rect. tube for a somewhat smaller project .

Anyone have experience of using this? Totally impractical base, but good
distortion figures.

Is it anything like the E80CC? that's nice and fairly close.

I've seen Philips and Siemens for sale - any difference?

NO !! I don't like the E80CC very much . Maybe it's great for jazz , but for
me the "stage" is to close (almost close to mono .....) and bass and highs
are to low . Might be nice if you use seperate amp for bass , mid and highs
and use it for the mids ..... Or use it in a tuner since most stations sound
the other way around ....

I don't know (yet) .... I have to try . But I would expect the Siemens come
close to the Valvo and the Philips might sound even better since they often
have the "black Mullard" getter so they might be made by Mullard .
Anyway I would expect the Siemens and the Philips would sound equal or
better than my Tungsram and if you heared my Tungsram , a National Union
"black glass" 6SN7 would be a dissapointment after that !!
Just one thing if you realy gonna use the ECC40 .... Don't put it close to
an
AC power line or power tranny . They are a bit sensitive according to hum .
A grounded shield or potted tranny would help in this case .

I had my NOS Valvo's for 8.00 euro each . That's about "the normal" price .
So if you can find a socket and the price is right , I would say go for it
.....
They are worth the trouble of finding the sockets .

Ron, do you have a schematic diagram of that tube's circuits in the CD
player?

No , sorry ...
I just started building and experimenting .
Never draw a schematic .
It's in a "mu-stage" à la Alan Kimmel with a PL802 each channel .
If you once build such a stage it's just so simple the next time .....
I also think I might be able to get even more "sound" since I started
the project with a 6SN7 and just putted in the ECC40 with an adaptor-
socket ......
The I-V conversion is "stolen" from Juka Tolonen , just a resistor
and a pasive low-pass filter .
For rectifying I used an AZ1-mesh-plate .
