Mackie Hard Disk Recorder News
My only real beef with the Mackie HDR24/96 and MDR24/96 hard disk recorders is that they wouldn't support disk drives larger than 32 GB. Not that I ever really wanted to store any more audio than that on a single drive, but it's become difficult to buy smaller drives from storefront sources these days. Mackie has just announced the availability of a replacement BIOS ROM which allows the recorder to use drives as large as 120 GB. It's practically a secret at this point, having been (as far as I can see anyway) only announced on the Mackie user's forum, but if you have an HDR and don't follow that forum, you can find the info on the installation kit at http://www.mackie.com/products/pdf/hdr_bios_upgrade.pdf A couple of "nominals" that might interest you. - It's only for the HDR, not the MDR (which, being essentially the same recorder but without the graphics, has the same limitation). The real reason why it's not available for the MDR is that you need to re-do the CMOS setup (because it's diffferent with the new BIOS) and to do that requires a monitor and keyboard. Mackie doesn't want you to dig up the MDR to connect the monitor and keyboard (void the warranty and all that) but if you're clever (and if they'll sell you the kit even though you don't have an HDR) it can be done. - It's nominally for extending the size of the external (removable) drive, but if you want to dig in to your recorder and install a larger inernal drive, that works too. Same caveat as above. In case you're wondering: - The SDR24/96 already works with drives well up into the hundreds of gigabytes. They say 2 terabytes, but I don't know anyone who's ever tried anything larger than 200 GB. - The MDR24/96 has been discontinued since September 2002, so unless you got a new last-gasp-old-stock unit, it's nearly out of warranty anyway, though Mackie has traditionally not been very fussy about watching the clock with warranty support. For those of you who search the newsgroups for everything you can find about a particular product and have looked for postings about the Mackie hard disk recorders have no doubt seen me whining about this limitation, so I thought I'd let you know that, wile there's still a limitation, it's likely that we'll be able to get 40-120 GB drives for at least a few more weeks now. That's put an extension on its useful life as a removable media recorder and that's a good thing. -- I'm really Mike Rivers - ) |
