Is there a DVD player with USB input?
There should be a DVD player that has a USB computer input--preferably a
portable one. Is there? The purpose would be to allow one to play CD/DVD/HD over an audio system. e.g. I have an external hard drive loaded with 1000 hours of music in compressed form. I plug it into a USB input on my computer and I can listen to almost anything. Navigation is through the computer display. A portable player has the advantage of a built-in display, which makes it unnecessary to connect your audio system to a TV set in order to select the pieces to be played. I've seen lots of portable DVD players at a reasonable price, but I've never seen one that could be connected to an external hard drive. Norm Strong |

In addition to a USB port, there are two other things you'd need that are missing from the typical portable DVD player: 1) iTunes-like software to manage your music 2) a user interface to control the software Throw those in, and the product you're describing already exists. It's called a laptop computer. bob |

It wouldn't even have to have a color display. It wouldn't even need a hard drive. But it should be able to play DVDs. Norm |

Laptops old enough to qualify as cheap may lack USB ports, a DVD-ROM drive, or both. (But why does it need to play DVDs? Don't you have a separate DVD player for that?) I definitely see the need. I store my music on a computer upstairs, which can feed my stereo wirelessly. I can control that (also wirelessly) from my laptop. I sit in the living room with the laptop, telling the desktop computer to send music to the stereo in my living room. It works great--but I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't already have the laptop. bob |

And the poster is looking for a system that has it all, since as he said, if he used a DVD player he'd need some sort of monitor to use it. My DVD player does fine with MP3s on CDROM. I might have started using that to play MP3s, but I don't want to turn on the monitor simply to play MP3s. Hence I bought an MP3 player last year, and I'm actually thinking about getting a portable CD player that plays MP3 disks. If that DVD player had a built in display (like VCRs used to have years ago), the self-contained nature would make it far more useable for things beyond playing DVDs. Michael |

"AZ Nomad" wrote in message ... If you have a recent flat panel TV, you simply run a VGA cable from laptop to TV. So why not use a desktop instead? More readily available at lower cost and more repairable/upgradeable. ie. you can fit a new $45 DVD burner into an old desktop (or a new DVDROM drive for even less), you can't do that with most laptops. But really who wants to tie up their new flat panel TV display for a music juke box anyway? MrT. |

Or are you one of those people who like to play movies and a jukebox at the same time? |

My video stuff is in a different part of the house from my music system. It's true that DVD players are pretty cheap these days, but I'd just as soon not have to add yet another piece of equipment that wouldn't be necessary if the laptop was decent. This is what I have in the way of music carriers: CDR, CDRW, DVD+R, DVD+RW and the hard drive. All of these with either aac, mp3 or wma files. The hard drive only cost me $90. Yes, it's true, I've done a lot of experimenting. :-) I have a desktop computer, but it's too noisy to use in the music room, largely because of the 3 fans. The display is also too big. The laptop idea is excellent--except for the cost. Does anybody have a laptop for sale, cheap. It doesn't need battery operation. If it had an 80GB hard drive, I wouldn't even need the USB connection. (I have 73GB of music.) Norm Norm |

Are there any competitive units with just as much storage. They would have to work with mp3, wma and aac. I have no intention of recoding all my stuff. Too much work. Yes, $350 is more than I want to spend, but if it does the job, I just may cough it up. Thanks for the info, Bob. It's the only decent answer I've received so far. Norm |

Well, you might have to recode some of it. iPods will take MP3 and AAC, but not WMA. Other brands might not handle AAC. I'm a Mac, so I don't really know the market outside the Apple brand. bob |
