Default Amplifier distortion only when "tape out" used

I have discovered a strange problem with my integrated amplifier (NAD
320BEE).

If I connect either of my two VCRs inputs to the Tape 2 output of the
amp (to record the sound from the amp onto VHS tape), I hear distortion
when playing back any source (CD, DVD player etc.). When I disconnect
the cable from the Tape 2 out, the sound is clear again.

What would cause this?

Could it have done any damage to the integrated amplifier?

Thanks.

I'd guess a ground loop. You could try connecting the two with a Ground
Loop Isolator. Radio Shack in the US sells one with RCA inputs and outputs.

Now that you mention it, whichever VCR I had connected was always
turned off when I noticed the distortion.

Getting it to work is not really important at all, I was just concerned
that my shiny new integrated amp might be damaged.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease :-)

Doubt it.

There are two problems. Most preamps do not have buffered outputs,
they simply divide the signal between as many devices that are
connected. Some equipment when unpowered, suck a lot
of current from the driving source, as when they use fet input switches.

I assume the devices are powered up. I do not know the specific NAD
circuit. I can only suggest that you may need another preamp, mixer, or
basically a buffer. is there any other device you have like a tape deck
that you can also try?
