Default Ports, Ports, Ports...

Still toying with design plans for a box, and I wanted to hear what
some of you have used for ports; as in what they've been made out of...
In the past I've always used PVC pipe, but recently I've been
wondering if something metal would work or if it would sound bad.
Actually I had galvanized steel in mind. Let me know what some things
are that you've used... Thanks!

I have been told in the past that aluminum is not acousticly friendly, but
im not sure of other metals. If I'm not mistaken, I read this in a older
issue of Car Audio & Electronics. The featured auto had an entire box of
aluminum, but to counter the "off-notes" if I may, the installer used lots
of sound deadening within the interior of the enclosure.

Good to know. The enclosure is still going to be made of MDF, any
other look I want on that and I can just cover it in something else.
The ports, though, I'm still leaning toward galvanized steel; it's
thick so I'm hoping that there wouldn't be any extra resonance or
anything. Anybody else? Has anyone actually used anything metal or
otherwisely interesting?

Well, I say just go for it and try it, if you don't like it, replace it with
PVC or something. Hands-on experience is always the best

Good Point. We shall see... If I get ambitious I might do that, but
galvanized steel is such a pain in the @$$ to work with I may just
forego it and paint/coat the PVC in some way (if I can find something
that won't look cheap and dumb... [any ideas on that one?])...

There are some that haven't a need for ports.

IMO Plastics make ports easier to work with and make them lighter.

What is it about normal port materials that you aren't happy with?

It's not that I'm not happy with it, it's that since I'm going to have
external ports on the next box I build, I want something that looks
more interesting...

No sweat. For glass/epoxy, search for g-10, g-12, or fr-4 grades. I have
sources and links if you're interested, they do get expensive... Glass (and
Kevlar, IIRC) are also available in "socks" that can be slid over any tube
or rectangle, etc and soaked with resin.

What about plexiglass? Does that come in 2.5 inch tubes that you're
aware of? Along those same lines, do you know if anyone makes 90
degree bends of plexiglass? I'm pretty sure that I've seen the tubes
before, but can't remember ever seeing any bends in that material...
Thanks for your help!

Check out:

http://www.professionalplastics.com

Search by name, and look for acrylic, polycarbonate, and clear PVC. I think
they have PVC elbows, but they are made with slip-fit joints like standard
PVC

also:

http://www.mcmaster.com/

search for plexiglass tube, etc

That should give you a start, as well as some google ideas...
