Well it's come time that i've become frustrated enough to want a laptop
instead of lugging my PC tower/LCD/keyboard/etc around. So what are you
people using for your mobile rigs?

I've got a question about P-4M versus PentiumM processors. I've ready
through threads on this newsgroup as well as computer newsgroups and
understand the difference. It seems to be that PentiumM Processors can
outperform P-4 processors, but that there is a trade off that comes when
the processor runs hot. As read in the threads, it seems that as a P-M
Processor gets hot, it's performance is notched down as to reduce
battery consumption and heat. This true? I've also read that for heavy
"multimedia tasks" that the P4, although hot, far outperforms a P-M.

My current desktop is spec'ed as follows:
Asus P4C800 Deluxe
Intel 2.4C overclocked to 2.95gHz/800mhz FSB
1 gig DDR400 ram
two 80gig WD 7200 RPM drives
running 2 MOTU 896 FW audio interfaces.

What matters to me in my search for a laptop is performance, not battery
life. My laptop will be on for so long that it will likely be plugged in
90% of the time anyway. What also matters is how loud the machine is. I
was impressed with a Toshiba Satellite with a P4 3.2gHz processor in
terms of performance, but it's fan was outrageously loud. Much louder
than my Antec case even. For the most part the Laptop will be playing
traffic cop, passing data from the MOTU 896's through to the external FW
hard drive.

My budget is about 2000 bucks Cdn. Anyone have any suggestions for
manufacturers? My budget is flexible.

Someone was selling a used HP Pavilion zd7140 in the "ott.forsale" newsgroup
for between $1500 and $1750 depending on memory. It's a 3GHz P4 Northwood
(800mhz bus, 512k L2 cache). Almost identical to my laptop with a slightly
different screen res.

You'll average 1 hour of battery life. It's a desktop machine stuffed into a
17inch, 10lb waffle iron.
It will run hot and when under heavy load, the fans will scream. (twin fans
sound like one of those little computer keyboard vacuums when revved up) No
way around that - it's a desktop processor, pure and simple. Zero compromise
on performance.

If I could get a notebook *identically* equipped as my current one but with
a PentiumM, I'd do it. The P-M doesn't seem to be any slower due to more
efficient design. (remember, it won't throttle back to cool down at first -
it'll just make the fans spin faster... only if it starts to overhead should
it throttle back. The added bonus is four times the battery life.

A Mackie MDR24/96. Not much harder to carry than a laptop computer,
24 channels of I/O right in the box and no additional software to buy.
But you can't suft the Internet with it during intermission.

This is another problem. And to be even more annoying, that fan starts
and stops when you least expect it. I did modify the fans in my Mackie
recorder to make it a little quieter and now it's quite satisfactory.
By the way, it's a 433 MHz Celeron with 256 MB RAM. Doesn't crash
either.
